A HEALING CENTERED APPROACH TO GUN VIOLENCE REDUCTION

Trauma is both a central cause and a cyclical result of community gun violence. Therefore, healing trauma must be a big part of the solution.

AS A MAN THINKETH IN HIS HEART

There are complex, multifaceted variables contributing to cyclical and retaliatory gun violence in Sacramento (i.e. poverty, longstanding gang culture, racial disparities). Such conditions expose youth to chronic, toxic stress, often resulting in individual and intergenerational trauma. Subsequently how they think, feel, and behave are directly impacted

Community gun violence is a learned behavior, often a trauma response.  Movement4Life’s approach to gun violence reduction centers healing, and teaches nonviolent Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for conflict.

VIOLENCE IS LEARNED BEHAVIOR

“…an inability to resolve conflict without resorting to violence is usually rooted in learned behavior and physical abuse that can be unlearned and properly treated with support and cognitive behavioral therapy.”

THERAPEUTIC SERVICES

Movement4Life’s participants have access to clinical therapy services through our partners at WellSpace Health.  Through WellSpace Health, program participants receive Trauma-Based as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) services. Services are culturally appropriate and provided by licensed therapists. CBT helps participants to heal from their trauma, identify problematic thinking, manage related emotions, and learn strategies for healthier responses to conflict.
